I’m Matthias Law. I started building for the web in 2004 and I’ve shipped more than a hundred sites since, most of them under someone else’s logo.
The short version
For most of my career I’ve been the developer agencies brought in when a project actually mattered. Design studios in New Zealand and Australia would hand over the design and I’d build the whole site. It’s good work, and I still do some of it, the partners page explains how.
What it also gave me was a long view of what happens to a website after launch. I would build something fast, careful and well-made, hand it over, and watch it slowly stop being any of those things. Nobody was responsible for it. The agency had moved on to the next project, the client didn’t know what to ask for, and two years later the site was slow, out of date and running software with holes in it.
Refined Digital exists to close that gap. We build the site, then we host it, monitor it, update it and keep its content current, for as long as you want us to. That’s why there’s a care plan on every proposal, and why the only sites we host are the ones we build. A website you own but nobody maintains isn’t an asset. It’s a liability with your logo on it.

Fixed prices
The proposal says what it costs and what’s in it. Scope can move; the price for the agreed scope doesn’t.
No surprises
Anything outside the agreed scope gets quoted in writing before work starts. You’ll never open an invoice you weren’t expecting.
You keep the keys
Your domain, your content, your accounts, in your name. If you ever leave, you leave with everything.
Where I work from
Christchurch, New Zealand. Clients around the world. Most of the work runs async with one call a week, which suits people who’d rather have the work done than sit in meetings about it.
